Merdeka!! Race?! What Race?! Race Car ahh!!

Yess!!! Finally!!! MERDEKA!!! While the whole nation is celebrating the country’s 52nd birthday today, it is also a day of freedom for me…. free from the tension of deadlines, free from multimedia project, free from advertisements project!! I believe the whole team really really gonna fully utilise this day to relax and rejuvenate. It had been a taxing and rush weeks before the event last night but that is a story for another day. Today is my beloved country’s 52 years of independence so it’s gonna be all about the good old Malaysia tanah tumpah darahku!! 🙂

Errr…. i might not be the perfect person to blog about the value of the independence to the country because i am a 80-s baby!! (Are a 80-s baby? 80-s babies are cool, you know? ;-)) More than 2 decades after the historic moment so i might not be able to really relate to the real meaning of it. but despite my shallow in that department, i am one very nationalist person!! i am very proud to be Malaysian despite what other people say. i remember i used to blog about Independence Day in my old blog too and i am not gonna repeat the same tune today.

During this whole month, i’ve been listening and reading about this whole ‘One Malaysia’ thing. yes it’s a good thing! it defines unity among the multiracial of this country!! Even during my recent vacation (this again will be a story for another day ok) the in-flight magazines were flooded with articles / comments / thoughts by the celebrities and influential individuals about this Independence Day and some really nearly made my teary….. (see i am a sentimental person and i love my country) among others they all shared one thing in common in their comments, UNITY, they talked about how they made it to where they are today regardless of race, culture and of course religions and reading their stories and hope for the country brought a dry lump to my throat. why? because it is almost surreal to see people of different races can work as a good team nowadays in the society. but i believe them. i believe some of them really experienced the bond despite the whole different background. i believe it can be achieved 🙂 but sometimes at the end of the day, that notorious thought and mentality of defining ppl with their colour will still emerge somehow…… i am not being sceptical but when talk about racism. Ask me!!

I am gonna stir the ever exist sensitive sentiment of the national unity – racism! in my very own version and experiences. so pls don’t judge anything here ok. we know that there are five major races in this blessed Malaysia, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban and Kadazan. I am none of them. but i am one of those who live together with the 4th majority, the Ibans because we share the same land of this good old Sarawak. In the peninsular, it is easy to indentify each race. If u are very fair, you are a Chinese, if you are not so fair, you are Malay and if you are dark, you are definitely Indian. In Sarawak, it can be one pain in the neck to identify the exact race of one person until you know their last names. This is because we Sarawakian have too many different tribes all across the land. We label every different tribes by their traits and attitudes (which often influenced by their fore fathers’ characters? Err…. something like that) so we label (from my point of view and the subconscious mentality) Malay – lazy and ‘gaya saja lebih’ but quite trustworthy and friendly (my Malay friends are all very friendly :-)), Chinese – hardworking but bengkeng and always businessminded, Iban – troublemakers (after drinking too much) but also quite hardworking (they were head hunters, remember?) they are very sempoi too, Kayan – hard to work with but can be very smart, Kenyah – kuat makan cili, Kelabit – kinda think highly of themselves but mostly good looking, Lun Bawang – notorious gangsters when you pick on them but among the earliest believer! Bidayuh – very happening bunch of ppl!! Melanau – errmm… kinda lazy and lack of cleanliness but courteous. Notice i stressed on their negatives point before the positives? That is because human always point out the bad point of ppl first whenever they comment on one person.

It is common for non-chinese family to send their children to Chinese school here (i think if there’s any Tamil school they would send their children there too!) you can see groups of young kids playing mud or simply playing by the rivers screaming and howling at each other in Mandarin just to find out that they are actually Iban or other local natives T_T haha!! so i am one of those fortunate ones. At first it was difficult to cope what more to say i never attended kindergarten. I was totally clueless how it would be like to study with all cina (will use this to refer Chinese) kids. Of course like Yasmin Ahmad’s commercial ads about ‘Tan Hong Meng in love’ where our children are colour blind, i was like that then. naive and innocent to whatever they call ‘race’ and thought everyone is equal. My parents never taught us to stay away from other races other then us. They only taught us to make friends with all our classmates and respect our teachers and just study. That’s it! and that’s why i didn’t feel any awkwardness when i mingled with the cina then. until…… jeng… jeng…. jeng…. one day at a tuition centre at my teacher’s place. i was 11 years old that time. it was the 1st time i heard the word ‘la zhi’ (Mandarin) a.k.a ‘la kia’ (in Hokkien). my friend said something about another friend’s mum and say something about her that ‘la zhi is like that’ (in accusing tone) then i being so innocent asked her back ‘what is ‘la zhi’?’ (i thought an adjective from her mother tounge) then she answered ‘like your race la, we call you all la zhi!’ and i knew that she refers to ‘la zhi’ as a negative influence. (kecik2 dah pandai complain pasal mak orang!) LOL!! then it finally struck me that the cina refer to all Bumiputra (the natives) other than Malay as ‘la kia’. In peninsula, u wont hear this word. it only can be heard in Sarawak! During my Uni time, all my cina friends treated me like themselves because they don’t know ‘la kia’ and they don’t have ‘la kia’ only Malay and Indian. They are the best bunch of friends i’ve ever met!

In Sarawak, if the cina said the word ‘la kia’ it is like the ‘N’ word American refer to African-American! But being a sport, i didnt want to take it so seriously. I continued to mix around with the cina up till today. My best friends are Chinese. ppl always say i look like one. so it didnt really matter. they do talk bout ‘la kia’ in front of me but then they will tell me that they are just referring to the Iban! Hahahaa!!! once it refers to all Bumiputras and one time it refers to only Iban!! It can be so funny sometimes when they ‘accidentally’ blurted the word ‘la kia’ in front of me and they went silent for a second to respect my presence. KNS!! and you could feel the tension in the air. It can be hurtful sometimes though because you know your friends are being so hypocrite at the same time. I had the worst experience with some ppl who tried hard to protect their family from being close to me just because they do not want to taint their family tree with other race other then cina T_T but then hor… to my fellow ‘la kia’ friends, we can excel in cina school too!! like me! like me!! you can get no. 1 in class too… !! (wah, tak tanya pun :p nvm, let me brag!) so don’t let the word ‘la kia’ bring you down. It’s just a word. Not you!! God calls us by name!! not by race or religions. And shouldn’t we do the same too?!

Apparently the critism on each tribes and races will always be around. our mentality is fixed to what we’ve think about people by their race. but let us all learn to embrace the differences with a positive thinking and accept things that we shared in common that we are all human being!! Race defines our roots and identity but not what we are. Our attitudes, values and integrities define us! I am still so blessed to be placed by God in this beloved country Malaysia, and forever thankful for this good land of the Hornbills, Sarawak where people still can live harmoniously without any extreme and open disapproval towards each other. I am not saying that i am free from all those little critism towards other ‘race’ but at least i never talk too many negative things about my own country 🙂 and i love it for what it is (minus the politics la… pls). Hmm… now let’s watch this meaningful commercial by the late Yasmin Ahmad. One of my favourites!! Race? What Race?! Race car ah??!!! LOL!!!

Yesterday during the Sunday service we sang this song and it made me cried….. i so love my country!!

in case u cant view here’s the lyrics. i insist!! :p

Yesuslah Tuhan yang layak ditinggikan
Layak disembah atas suku-suku bangsa
Dengan darahMu Kau tlah tebus bangsaku
Genapi Tuhan, FirmanMu atas ne – gri ku

Hatiku rindu melihat kemuliaanMu
Hatiku rindu melihat curahan kuasaMu
Di tanah tercinta negara Malaysia
Ku berdoa Malaysia penuh kemuliaanMu
Malaysia bagi kemuliaanMu

Ya Allah ku nyatakan kemuliaanMu
Ya Allah ku nyatakan curahan kuasaMu
Di tanah tercinta negara Malaysia
Ku berdoa Malaysia penuh kemuliaanMu
Malaysia bagi kemuliaanMu

and i stumbled upon this while browsing for the above video. this is from our one and only miss Jacklyn Victor, Harapan Bangsa 🙂

you can see one with lyrics here.

Happy Birthday Malaysia!!

Have a blessed Merdeka Day, ppl!!

*EDIT*
OK, I AM GETTING VERY UNCONFORTABLE BOUT MY OWN WORDS ABOVE SO BEFORE I GOT MYSELF INTO TROUBLE I WANT TO STRESS HERE THAT ALL DESCRIPTIONs ABOUT EACH RACES ABOVE ARE MERELY MY OWN GENERAL THOUGHT AND OBSERVATION. SO DONT HATE ME PLS T_T. NOT ALL OF THEM ARE LIKE THAT. I HAVE MANY FRIENDS OF DIFF TRIBES AND THEY ARE ALL AWESOME PPL!! HONEST!!

PoPo

I am having that blank moment where i dunno what to blog so i take the easiest way out by simply write about this extended family member of ours. you know what they say about love your loved ones before it’s too late? I am actually doing that now. before we lose (not that i wish for it) him, i better grace this blog with his not-so-macho face here. errmmm… more as a ‘lab-rat’ for my crazy hobby la. was playing with my 50mm f1.4 lense.

So boys and girls, let me introduce to you…. Mr. PoPo!! *instead of applause, roar of laughters – LOL!*

see... so blurRR!!

see... so blurRR!!

I know, what a sissy name for a male cat, right?! but what to do?! his first owner gave that name as if there were no other name in the world suits a white fur cat anymore. when they gave him away for ‘adoption’ to us because they had to move to KL, PoPo was already in his ‘teen’. so when us siblings wanted to give him a new name The Mother said “no need!” T_T the reason was that he has already used to his name PoPo and if with the new name he might confuse himself and won’t listen when u call. (hisk!! as if cats really know their name and say ‘coming!’ when u call them!!) so, PoPo remains as PoPo.

PoPo's eyes change colour with different environment. when it's bright they turn blue, when it's dark they turn red. tak percaya? next time i'll show the red eyes

PoPo's eyes change colour with different environment. when it's bright they turn blue, when it's dark they turn red. tak percaya? next time i'll show the red eyes

One very funny thing about PoPo that i find hard to believe up to this date is that, he has a heart disease. as in he can have heart attack!! Haha!! when The Mother told us the previous owner had warned us not to yell or do anything that could jolt / shock him because he has ‘sakit jantung’ i went “WHAT??!! HAHAHA!!! Cat can have heart attack too?? eeee….. so funny!! HAHAHA!!” for first time in my life that i hear cat can have heart attack too! LOL!! despite my sceptical, i never attempt to scare / shock PoPo though. who knows it might be true and he really collapse for his life?? who will give him CPR then?? definitely not me!! :p

the 'boss' of the house o_O

the 'boss' of the house o_O

Whatever it is, PoPo is one pet that we all love. Well, we love all our previous (pets) cats actually. i just hope PoPo will stay longer with us (till his time is up due to old age not because of any freak accident like what happened to some before this T_T) and continue to cheer the house with his ‘bossy’ antics and simply just being there.

Be blessed, people!!

why do we yell in anger?

A sage asked his disciples, ‘Why do people yell at each other when
they are upset?’

The men thought for a while,’Because we lose our calm’ said one.’we
yell for that.’

‘But, why to yell when the other person is just next to you?’ asked
the sage. ‘ Isn’t it possible to speak to him or her with a soft
voice? Why do you yell at a person when you’re angry?’

The men gave some other answers but none satisfied the sage. Finally
he explained, ‘When two people are angry at each other, their hearts
distance a lot. To cover that distance they must yell, to be able to
hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to
yell to hear each other through that great distance.’

Then the sage asked, What happens when two people fall in love? They
do not yell at each other but talk softly, why? Their hearts are very
close. The distance between them is very small…

The sage continued, ‘When they love each other even more, what happens?
They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other
in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at
each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they
love each other.’

Then the sage said, ‘When you argue do not let your hearts get
distant, do not say words that distance each other more, else there
will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find
the path to return.

found this article somewhere some times ago. i went all the way to track it back just to post here and it still speaks to me as it used to then. just feel like sharing it here cos it really hit me hard on the forehead when i first read it. cos i yell too much :p

Fireproof

Fireproof doesn’t mean the fire will never come. It means when the fire comes that you will be able to withstand it. by Michael Simmons from the movie Fireproof

Catherine Holt: So, what day are you on?
Caleb Holt: Uh… 43.
Catherine Holt: There’s only 40.
Caleb Holt: Who says I have to stop?
from the movie Fireproof

had a long day today. but i am not complaining because i know it was all worthwhile. so i have the priviledge to join the Putri (The Women Section) on their this week’s activity – movie! (was assigned as their dvd cum lcd controller) a movie called Fireproof. a truly inspiring movie. especially for the married ones. many memorable quotes and verses from the movie that really moving but the above two were ones i totally can relate to. maybe because i am still unmarried so i didnt really take good attention to the other quotes. but at least i learned something.

like my own quote,

i live to learn and i learn to live with it

CMee: Just Cause

i had a hunch things will not gonna be the same that day. it wont be a good sight and it will be a very unconfortable feelings later on. i sat at our usual seat of the school bus. with our almost identical purple school bag and my gigantic water bottle.

my heart skipped a beat faster as the bus drew nearer to her house. i saw her waiting in front of the house. with our almost identical purple school bag minus a gigantic water bottle. finally the moment i dreaded….

she stepped inside. dark faced. walked briskly passed me without even a slight glance. i felt my face burning with shame as she sat two seats apart from ‘our’ seat. now everyone in the school bus knew that we were having a major BFF crisis. yeah…. EVERYONE in the bus looked at us with knowing eyes and dare not disturb or ask anything….. even uncle sim the bus driver looked at us at one kind trough his rear view even with his dark vintage sunglasess on, i knew he could see the tension too. that day, the ride to school was unbearably long….

but that never stop the camaraderie. disputes happen in all relationships. even in marriages. so as girl friends’. it is one element that makes the bond even ‘friendlier’. even if their attitudes irk us so much, they are still the one that we come to when there are new gossips around or when the blouse that they like are on sales! we didnt want to lose that company and the silly laughters together with them.

as much as i love the name Zoe but i prefer calling her cmee here. cmee is one of the longest friend that i knew i had and still have. we had a history of talking the whole night away until the 1st glimps of the sun rose and the ah ma next door was ready to go out to sell her veges and we turned into zombies afterwards. sleepovers with senseless chats. unnecassary suppers just because we didnt want to go home yet. shoppings that we didnt need when we were still in the ‘student’ category but just because it was mega sales we had to splurge! the friend who doesnt mind to purchase identical blouse / tops / pants or even underwares T_T because we just have to love the same thing T_T and the excuse will always be “it’s ok, we are not in the same place anyway! there’s a freakin wide ocean separating us. mai3 er2 yi3 la4!!”

as the years go by and the different environment and the georaphical factors we cannot deny that we were slowly slumping into the edge of being more ignorance towards each other to the danger of just being mere aquaintances T_T we dont share too many secrets anymore. we might not be able to be as close as we used to be but close enough to go for a budget holiday together and share a freakin’ single bed 🙂

we found this piece of ‘artwork’ outside of our Inn in Kuta and i didnt want to waste anything :p

Bali: statues, monuments and colourful streets….

If you ask me what is the distinctive thing about bali that i remember after two and half month have passed? it would be their fervent for rock statues and their culture that is still held strong by the local folks…. the monuments were outstanding. the people there were one of a kind and steadfast to their beliefs despite the island is being over commercialised and too business-like nowadays. The folks still wear their traditional costume (especially the ladies young and old) to the temple with offerings in their basket which were carried on their head!! you will hardly see a house without a business signboard or anything to sell in front of it. be it a salon or simply an eating place, there must be a business going on. in ubud, almost every single house was transformed into a shop selling all kinds of local products. these shop houses were their home!

Ubud is well knows of its painting and wood sculptures. the wooden sculptures or furnitures with good woods that we buy in Msia (esp in Miri, Swk) for RM400 or more can be bought at RM150 there….. hisk!! talking bout this make me pissed!! cos i forgot to buy my Giraffes!!! T_T huhuhuhuuu……

ok now, stop crapping. here are some of the unique monuments and the many random shots that i captured along the way on the streets of Bali. u can scroll down very fast if u like :p

of smiley face and sugary donuts

i know i shouldnt write things too personal here. especially about this person who shared a decade of my over a quarter of century of life. i errm… wasnt prepare to reveal anything about the thing called relationship openly here and i was literally warned not to. but this time i wanna let loose a little. they said, ‘follow all the rules, you’ll miss half the fun?’ ceh… ceh… only applies on this case ok. boys and girls dont hold to that motto please… please…

i dont remember when was the last time we actually had a proper birthday celebration together. i mean, with cake, candles, on the spot gifts et cetera… it was either we were far apart or we just couldnt squeeze a time to be around on the occasion. the peril of being in a LDR!! there might be once or twice that we managed to be in flesh to celebrate together but they were just too few that they went unnumbered by my absent mind! why am i like this?! T_T but i do like the hearty phone calls on every birthdays though and talking bout the type of present we were expecting, especially what I expected 🙂 talking about present, at the same time i dreaded the idea of gift hunting for him. i remember the three quater pants that i gave but he thought that it was given by the Bro all the while. KNS!! i remember the t-shirts that i gave but just to find out he seldom wear them. KNS!! i remember he wanted an aviator shades, bought it as a gift but just to find out that he never once use it. KNS!! KNS!! T_T and since then, i chose to directly ask what he wants lest i waste for things that he dislikes. and it was a common thing that we didnt receive any gift on the actual day. presents were always on hold and delayed T_T

so i hurriedly ordered everything that were on my mind upon arrival from the outstation before commuting another long hour journey to his place. i paused for a couple of minutes to think of what to ‘write’ on the marble cheesecake. all i could think of was a warm smiley face. i wanted a smiley face on his cake!! cos that was what i saw when i thought of him at that very moment. or should i say his chicky smirk?! and that signature laugh!! Heck, someone even wrote this on his fb wall “happy birthday! miss ur laugh… hahahahahahahahahaaa….” ppl missed his laugh!! but how am i supposed to put that on the cake? ask the person to draw a laughing Popeye?! I immediately shoved that thought far far away….. he is not a Popeye and i am definitely not Olive. (apa kaitan?) and that’s how i knew him. that chicky smirk and a rowdy laugh.

then i ordered something that could rise the adrenaline level high high up. Big Apple donuts certainly can do that!! i just hope that none of us will be an addition to the diabetic statistic.

so to The Boyfriend, i may not good at birthday presents but the smiley face certainly represent how much it means to me whenever you flash that assurance smile. and that’s all that matters today. That silly smirk that you gave me today is still the same smirk you gave me many years ago. and about the sugary donuts i just dunno how they fit in here but then again, isnt that sound familiar? It’s just me being me…. random!

the real thing was….

‘sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey’

DSC_0011_edited

that was all i wanted to say…

and eventhough 24 hours have passed, let me just say it again…..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DARLING!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DARLING!!!

(aihhh… the smiley face was too mini and the marble cheesecake had be a hideous one T_T)

-anyway, much love and God bless-

two days ago an accident happended at mlng3 with one sad fatality. i was just working ‘next door’. the location i worked that day was just a fence away from mlng3. me and my col even had a time to snap some pictures of mlng from where we stood in bcot.

after the incident i received sms-es from ppl close to me and one unexpected one asking bout my condition. whether i was in mlng. thank God i wasnt. those sms-es sent smiles to my face. i’m blessed that i am so loved and cared 🙂 i am so easy to please!!

yesterday, The Grandparents came down to town from their outskirts place (fyi, i am in Btu) upon knowing i was around. we had lunch. seeing The Grandma laughed with delight eventhough she couldnt chew the kailan with her false teeth sent warmth to my heart. i knew they felt the same way to see me too 🙂 The Grandparents are so easy to please!!

then i sent TheYoungBro to his tuition centre. he asked for money sometimes. sometimes RM10 but i gave RM5. he didnt ask last night, just a ride to the tuition centre and not be late, that’s all. TheYoungBro is so easy to please!!

The Sister bought Big Apple for anybody at home. Especially for The Mother and TheYoungbro. i knew The Mother was elated. it showed through her eyes and smiles. The Mother is so easy to please!!

had dinner with a friend. he picked me up form the terminal in the afternoon. just a free meal he said. hmm…. my friend is so easy to please!!

those were the simple joy i had for the passed few days. what’s yours?!

sometimes we look at the big picture much too often that we overlooked the little details that make the big picture looks the way it is.

and talking about picture, here’s a scenic photo from my sg. collection :p
